Blog: using the NHS app – Dr Karl Graham

The NHS App is now available for all patients of West Hampshire CCG practices. Patients can check out their symptoms, book appointments, view their medical record and set their organ donor and information sharing preferences. Integration with online consultation platforms, including eConsult, is under development

A big advantage of the NHS App over other third-party apps is that patients can register without having to obtain registration details from their practice. My practice, Hedge End Medical Centre, now routinely promotes this actively to all newly registering patients. I also encourage the patients I see to use the App.

I have tried out the App myself and it seems to be well designed and intuitive to use. Having online access to my own medical record enabled me to identify an incorrect entry which has now been resolved. This experience has led me to encourage everybody to check their medical record for accuracy.

The GP contract requires that we make 25% of our appointments available for online booking. Encouraging patients to book appointments themselves rather than phoning the practice can reduce the demand on practice call handling staff.
