Have your say on the future of Kings Worthy branch surgery

Local GPs are calling on users of the Kings Worthy branch surgery to have their say about its future.

NHS West Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and the GP partners at Friarsgate Practice are proposing the closure of the Kings Worthy branch surgery.

We are launching a thirty day consultation to hear your views. The consultation is open today and closes on 18 March 2016. Friarsgate Practice is writing to all of their patients who are registered at Kings Worthy to invite them to a special engagement meeting about this proposal in the village in March.

The Pound Road building, which caters for around 7% of patients registered with Friarsgate Practice, does not currently meet the high standards we would like for our patients in west Hampshire. The building was closed for two months in 2015 in order for Winchester City Council, the landlord of the property, to complete essential maintenance. Even with the work carried out last year, the building needs a further £35,000 worth of repairs to make it fit for purpose.

Doing nothing is not an option.

Following over eight months of work by the GP partners, the local patient participation group, Winchester City Council and West Hampshire CCG, a number of options were investigated. A public meeting in October considered whether new premises in Kings Worthy could be found or that a new surgery could be built from scratch in the village.

Both these options were popular, but unfortunately neither is viable. This is because no suitable premises could be found and financial pressures on the NHS make it difficult to justify the investment required to build new premises which would cater for less than 2,000 patients.

In recent times more and more patients have found the surgery in Weeke, just three miles away, to be a useful and convenient alternative to Kings Worthy. This surgery has state of the art facilities with extended hours for patients. This means you can see a GP more quickly, at a more convenient time.

We recognise this proposal may cause concerns about how local patients in the area, particularly the very elderly, will be supported in the event of closure. That is why we are currently working closely with our colleagues Winchester City Council and Community First to find the best solution for this small group of patients.

If you use Kings Worthy branch surgery, we want to hear your views. Take part in the consultation by:

Dr T.J. Stannard, Senior Partner at the Friarsgate Practice, said:

“Having had a presence in Kings Worthy for many years, we are not putting forward this proposal lightly. However, after a considerable amount of work looking at the different options, we believe that this proposal is the only viable solution”.
